At 1 a.m. on April 13, two USC students were shot dead in an attempted carjacking at northwest of the university.
The night was the rainiest of the semester, and the following day, a quiet shock flooded the student body. Ming Qu and Ying Wu were graduate students from China. They were found dead at the scene. The suspect remains at large.
That night, the university held a vigil in their memory. As a way of honoring the victims in the best way I knew how, I felt compelled to photograph the vigil and share the photos with you.
The incident, which occurred 5 blocks from my apartment, has altered the way I think about my neighborhood and my university. USC makes a tremendous effort to protect its students, but it is ultimately the responsibility of the individual to protect themselves. The neighborhood is not unsafe, but no one is immune to tragedy.
It could have been any of us. Look out for each other, and most of all, look out for yourself.
