South LA | Democratic Spaces is a multimedia collaboration between photographer Carlo Acenas, Metaconnects/Metamorphosis, Intersections South LA, and partners in the South Los Angeles community, made possible by a generous $10,000 grant from Cal Humanities Community Stories.

Even in the most difficult conditions, "democratic spaces" are emerging in South LA, where community members have a voice for social change. Featured in this photography exhibit are some of the strongest advocates for positive social change in South LA. They each selected a democratic space that has proved invaluable to their organization's work.

The photographs were exhibited in the main hall of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism from September to December 2012. For more information about the exhibit, visit
